Venous lakes, also known as Phlebectases, are soft and benign papules that appear on sun-exposed skin such as the lips, face, and ears. These are caused by a vascular dilation, giving them their dark blue or violet colour.

The vascular dilation (a capillary aneurysm) was first described in 1956 and is important to address using venous lake laser treatment methods due to its similarity to skin cancers, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.
